Topeka, Kansas – Torrential rain and potential flooding could hit much of eastern and central Kansas from Thursday afternoon through Friday, threatening road closures, river flooding, and rising creeks across nearly two dozen counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Topeka, a Flood Watch will be in effect from 4 p.m. Thursday through 1 p.m. Friday for cities including Topeka, Manhattan, Lawrence, Emporia, and surrounding areas. Thunderstorms capable of dropping more than three inches of rain in just a few hours are expected to develop Thursday afternoon, with the heaviest downpours lingering overnight into Friday morning.

Rural highways and urban streets in Shawnee, Douglas, Riley, Lyon, and Jefferson counties are especially vulnerable to flooding. Flash flooding could impact low-lying roads, small creeks, and underpasses in city centers such as Topeka, Lawrence, and Manhattan, while rural communities in Wabaunsee and Osage counties should remain alert for sudden water rises. Area residents are urged to avoid driving through water-covered roads and monitor local alerts. Prepare now by moving vehicles to higher ground and charging electronic devices in case of power outages.

Flooding threats could last through Friday afternoon, with additional advisories possible if rainfall intensifies or storm bands stall over the region.
