Fort Scott, Kan. – Flash flooding is underway across Bourbon County early Monday after up to 3 inches of rain fell overnight, prompting an urgent warning from the National Weather Service.
According to the NWS in Springfield, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect until 6:15 a.m. CDT for southeastern Kansas. Thunderstorms have dumped between 2 and 3 inches of rain in a short period, overwhelming drainage systems and threatening roads, low-lying neighborhoods, and stream crossings.
Communities including Fort Scott, Bronson, Uniontown, and Redfield are expected to see water-covered streets, especially near creeks, underpasses, and poorly drained intersections. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through floodwaters—especially before sunrise when flooded areas are harder to spot.
Residents in smaller towns like Mapleton, Hiattville, and Xenia should remain alert as rising waters may impact rural roads and access routes. Emergency officials recommend staying home if possible and securing valuables from basements or ground-level areas.
The warning will remain in place until 6:15 a.m., but additional alerts may be issued if heavy rain persists or flooding expands.
