Fort Scott, Kansas – Torrential rain pounded southeastern Kansas early Monday, triggering a flash flood warning for Bourbon County that remains in effect until 6:15 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, up to 3 inches of rain fell overnight as thunderstorms swept across the area. Doppler radar detected widespread heavy rainfall, with flooding already underway or expected to begin imminently.

Communities at risk include Fort Scott, Uniontown, Bronson, and Redfield. Water is rising rapidly in low-lying areas, small creeks, and along streets and underpasses. Drivers are urged to avoid Porterville Road, U.S. Route 54 near Mapleton, and any flooded intersections in Fort Scott.

Officials warn that navigating flooded roads remains the leading cause of flood-related deaths. Residents should avoid travel unless absolutely necessary and never attempt to drive through standing water. If you live in a flood-prone area, prepare to move to higher ground quickly.

The flash flood warning may be extended if storms persist. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts for the latest updates.
