Dodge City, KS – A Red Flag Warning is in effect for southwest Kansas until 8 p.m. CST Tuesday as strong winds and dry conditions create a heightened wildfire risk.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, the affected areas include Kearny, Finney, Stanton, Grant, Haskell, Gray, Morton, Stevens, Seward, and Meade counties. Winds from the south are expected to range between 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph. Relative humidity levels could drop as low as 12 percent, further increasing fire danger.
Officials warn that any fire that develops could spread rapidly. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and to take precautions to prevent accidental fires. The combination of dry vegetation, strong winds, and low humidity can lead to extreme fire behavior, making firefighting efforts challenging.
The National Weather Service advises residents to remain vigilant and follow local emergency management guidance. Those in the affected areas should avoid activities that could generate sparks, such as operating machinery near dry grass or discarding cigarette butts improperly.
