Dodge City, KS – A Red Flag Warning remains in effect across much of central and south-central Kansas today, with dangerous fire conditions expected until 9 p.m. The National Weather Service has issued an urgent fire weather alert, warning of extreme and catastrophic wildfire risk due to strong winds and low humidity.
According to the National Weather Service, the affected areas include Stafford, Pratt, Comanche, and Barber counties, as well as Russell, Barton, Saline, McPherson, Harvey, and Sedgwick counties, among others. The warning took effect at 10 a.m. and will remain in place until late evening.
Winds are forecasted to reach 25 to 45 mph, with gusts up to 70 mph in some areas. Relative humidity is expected to drop as low as 15 percent, creating conditions that could cause any fire to spread rapidly and become difficult to control. Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning today, as any flames could quickly turn into a dangerous wildfire.
Residents are advised to secure loose objects and avoid activities that could spark a fire. Fire crews across the region remain on high alert. Authorities urge the public to report any signs of wildfire immediately.
