Wichita, Kansas – 30 mph wind gusts are increasing grassfire spread risk through Saturday evening, as dry air and temperatures in the 60s create dangerous burning conditions across central and south-central Kansas. Gusty south winds and cured grasses are allowing fires to ignite and spread quickly, especially during the afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, elevated fire danger is expected throughout the day as south winds strengthen across the region, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph. High temperatures will range from the low to mid-60s, including 63°F in Wichita, Salina, and Hutchinson, and up to 64°F in Great Bend and Winfield.

The highest risk areas include communities along Interstate 135 and U.S. Highway 50, where open fields and dry vegetation create ideal conditions for fast-moving grassfires. Cities such as Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, and Great Bend could see fires spread rapidly if ignited, especially in rural and agricultural zones.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and use caution with any equipment that may produce sparks. Even small embers can quickly grow out of control under these windy and dry conditions.

Breezy conditions will continue into Saturday night, with lows falling into the mid-40s. Fire danger will gradually decrease after sunset as winds ease, but elevated risk may persist into Sunday if dry conditions remain in place.
