Dodge City, Kansas – A dangerous window for fast-moving grassfires is opening across southwest Kansas this afternoon, with strong winds and extremely dry air combining to create rapid ignition risk through early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Dodge City, an elevated fire danger is expected from noon until 6 p.m. Tuesday, especially along and west of Highway 83. Wind gusts between 15 and 25 mph will pair with humidity levels dropping as low as 14 to 18 percent, allowing fires to spread quickly in dry grasses.
Communities including Dodge City, Garden City, Liberal, and Scott City face the highest threat during peak heating hours. Open areas along U.S. 50 and Highway 83 are particularly vulnerable, where winds can push flames rapidly across fields and roadways, reducing visibility and creating sudden hazards for drivers.
Officials urge residents to avoid all outdoor burning, secure equipment that could spark, and report any signs of smoke immediately. Even a small ignition source can escalate quickly under these conditions.
The fire risk will begin to ease after sunset as winds weaken and humidity recovers, but elevated concerns could return if dry weather persists into midweek.
