Wichita, KS – Gusty winds and dry conditions are combining to create elevated to very high grassfire danger across much of central and south-central Kansas today, according to the National Weather Service in Wichita.
Forecasters say strong south winds, gusting between 35 and 40 mph, will develop late this morning and persist through the early evening hours. While winds are not expected to be as strong as Thursday’s, they will still be powerful enough to rapidly spread fires, especially in dry grasslands.
The highest fire danger is expected across portions of central Kansas, where conditions have been classified as very high. Areas farther east, including parts of south-central and southeast Kansas, remain under a high fire danger risk. Cities potentially impacted include Wichita, Hutchinson, Salina, Emporia, Pratt, Harper, Winfield, and Coffeyville.
According to the National Weather Service, the combination of dry fuels, low humidity, and strong winds creates a dangerous environment where even a small spark can quickly turn into a fast-moving grassfire. Fires can spread rapidly and become difficult to control in these conditions.
Officials are urging residents to avoid outdoor burning, properly secure trailer chains, and use caution with equipment, cigarettes, or anything that could create a spark. Farmers and ranchers should also take extra care when operating machinery in open fields.
While conditions are expected to gradually improve later this evening as winds decrease, the highest risk window will be from late morning through early evening.
Residents are encouraged to stay alert and report any fires immediately to local authorities.
