Hill City, Kansas – A minor earthquake struck northwestern Kansas early Saturday, briefly shaking parts of Graham County near Hill City.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the 2.9 magnitude quake occurred at 5:10 a.m. local time, with an epicenter located about 4 kilometers southeast of Hill City and a depth of 6.6 kilometers. While no damage was immediately reported, at least two residents submitted “Did You Feel It?” responses to the USGS.
The quake, though light, was felt by residents across the Great Plains region, particularly near rural areas along U.S. Route 283 and K-18. Earthquakes of this size are uncommon but not unprecedented in Kansas, which has seen a rise in seismic activity in recent years due to both natural and human-induced causes.
Emergency management officials urge residents to review earthquake preparedness plans, especially in areas not typically prone to seismic events. Keep heavy items secured, know safe spots indoors, and have an emergency kit ready.
No additional tremors have been recorded, but residents are encouraged to report any shaking to the USGS as monitoring continues through the weekend.
