De Soto, KS – Residents in Johnson County can safely dispose of expired or unused medications this Saturday, October 25, during the National DEA Take Back Day at Harp’s Food Store, 34040 Commerce Drive in De Soto. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with the Northwest Consolidated Fire District for a friendly community challenge — collecting food items to benefit the De Soto Food Pantry. The agency that gathers the most donations will earn bragging rights, officials said.

According to the department, accepted items include pills, vitamins, and over-the-counter medications. However, liquids, needles, inhalers, and sharps will not be accepted for safety reasons.

The event coincides with the National Prescription Drug Take Back initiative, a DEA-backed effort aimed at preventing misuse of leftover medications and keeping them out of the environment.

Residents are encouraged to bring food donations and unused medications to contribute to both community safety and local hunger relief efforts.
