Goodland, KS – A High Wind Warning remains in effect for portions of eastern Colorado, western Kansas, and southwestern Nebraska until noon MDT (1 p.m. CDT) Wednesday, with powerful wind gusts expected to reach up to 70 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, sustained north winds of 30 to 40 mph will continue overnight and into Wednesday morning, affecting cities including Goodland, Colby, McCook, and Norton. The strongest gusts could cause power outages, move loose debris, and make travel hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles. Additionally, pockets of blowing dust may lead to sudden visibility reductions, increasing the risk for motorists.
Residents are urged to secure outdoor objects and take necessary precautions ahead of the peak wind activity. The advisory also warns that airborne dust can worsen air quality, posing respiratory risks, especially for children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing conditions.
While a previous Blowing Dust Advisory has expired for Wallace, Logan, Greeley, and Wichita counties in Kansas, the threat of additional dust surges remains possible through Tuesday evening.
Travelers are advised to check road conditions and exercise caution, particularly in open areas where crosswinds can be severe. The National Weather Service continues to monitor conditions and will provide updates as necessary.
