Garden City, Kan. – Sub-freezing temperatures across northwest Kansas and southwest Nebraska could cause crop and garden damage early Saturday, as frost settles in across the region.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Goodland and Dodge City, a frost advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. CDT (8 a.m. MDT). Lows between 29°F and 32°F are expected across counties including Finney, Scott, Norton, and Gove in Kansas, and Red Willow in Nebraska. Frost may form rapidly during the pre-dawn hours.
Cities including McCook, Garden City, Oakley, and Hoxie are urged to cover or bring in sensitive outdoor vegetation. Unprotected plants may be killed or severely damaged, particularly in open fields and low-lying areas. Farmers and gardeners are encouraged to use coverings or irrigation to mitigate damage.
This unseasonable cold snap comes after a mild spring stretch and could affect early crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, and flowering trees. Residents in Tribune, Sublette, and Syracuse should take immediate precautions.
Temperatures will gradually rise after sunrise, but additional frost advisories could be issued if cold conditions persist overnight into Sunday.
