Kansas City, Missouri – A rapid overnight temperature drop will put thousands of gardens and early-season crops at risk, with lows falling to 26°F before sunrise Sunday across much of Missouri and eastern Kansas.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Frost Advisory is in effect from midnight to 8 a.m. Sunday. The alert spans a large portion of the region, including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Independence, Overland Park, and Sedalia. Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to fall quickly after midnight, creating widespread frost formation.

The coldest conditions are expected between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m., especially in low-lying and rural areas from Buchanan County through Cass and Lafayette counties. Major corridors like I-70, I-35, and U.S. 69 could see frost on elevated surfaces, particularly bridges and overpasses during the early morning hours.

Residents should cover or bring in sensitive plants, protect outdoor gardens, and check vulnerable vegetation. Even brief exposure to temperatures in the mid-20s can cause irreversible damage.

Temperatures will rebound quickly after sunrise Sunday, but additional chilly mornings remain possible into early next week, keeping the risk for more advisories on the table.
