KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Drivers across Missouri could see damp roads south of Interstate 70 Friday as light rain moves through, paired with temperatures that are running nearly 20 degrees below normal for early September.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, the best chances for rain will be in central and southern parts of the state, including Butler, Sedalia, and Jefferson City. Rain chances peak through the afternoon and early evening, while areas north of I-70 remain mostly dry.

Highs will only climb into the mid-60s, near record lows for daytime temperatures. Overnight into Saturday morning, temperatures could dip into the mid-40s, raising the chance of record-breaking cold for this time of year. Residents are urged to dress in layers and limit outdoor activity early Saturday morning when the chill will be sharpest.

Travelers heading south of Kansas City toward Springfield or Lake of the Ozarks should expect occasional showers through tonight, with wet roads likely. While rainfall totals will stay light, the combination of damp weather and unseasonable cold could catch weekend plans off guard.

Cool conditions are expected to linger into the weekend, with more seasonable warmth not likely until mid-next week.
