Kansas City, Missouri – Outdoor burning could spark fast-moving fires within minutes Friday afternoon as strong winds and dry air combine across western Missouri and eastern Kansas.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon until 8 p.m. Friday, driven by north winds gusting up to 30 mph and critically low humidity levels. These conditions allow fires to spread rapidly and become difficult to control.

The highest risk stretches from Kansas City west toward Topeka and St. Joseph, including communities like Lawrence, Ottawa, and Maryville. Open fields, dry grasses, and construction zones pose particular concern, especially along major corridors like I-70 and I-35 where sparks from vehicles or equipment could ignite fires.

Afternoon temperatures will remain cooler behind a cold front, topping out in the mid to upper 50s across the region, including 58 degrees in Kansas City and Topeka. Despite the mild temperatures, the dry air mass significantly increases fire վտանգ.

Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning, properly discard cigarettes, and secure trailer chains that could drag and spark along roadways. Emergency officials warn that even small flames can grow quickly under these conditions.

The warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. Friday, with calmer winds expected later tonight, though elevated fire risk may linger into the weekend.
