Missouri – A silver haze clings to Kansas City’s skyline this morning, softening streetlights and freezing on windshields as temperatures hover in the low 20s. Freezing fog and icy air make this an uneasy start for early commuters across the metro and along I-70 and I-35.
The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill reports patchy freezing fog through mid-morning, with low visibility and slick bridges possible until around 9 a.m. Temperatures will slowly climb into the low 30s, bringing limited melting before another push of Arctic air returns later in the week.
Earlier snowfall across northwest Missouri left behind 1–2 inches of accumulation, while a few higher terrain areas saw up to 4 inches. While the snow has ended, residual moisture is refreezing on shaded roads and rural stretches, creating black ice hazards.
By midweek, skies clear but temperatures remain stubbornly cold — highs near 37°F Wednesday and morning lows in the teens through Thursday. Sunshine returns by Thursday afternoon, followed by a chilly but calmer weekend with highs near 40°F.
Drivers are urged to slow down on untreated roads and allow extra braking distance on bridges and ramps. The first week of December often brings flash freezing events like this — a reminder that winter’s grip on Missouri is only beginning.
