Kansas City, MO – Drivers across the Kansas City metro could encounter slick roads and strong winds late Sunday night as rain quickly transitions to snow behind a powerful cold front sweeping across Missouri.
Saturday brings a warm and quiet stretch with sunshine pushing temperatures to around 72°F across Jackson, Clay, and Platte counties. Light east winds will gradually shift south during the afternoon with occasional gusts near 21 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, the weather turns active Sunday. Rain is expected to develop after 1 p.m. Sunday, becoming breezy with southwest winds shifting northwest and gusting up to 47 mph as colder air surges into the region.
Temperatures will drop sharply Sunday evening, allowing rain to mix with and change to snow between late evening and overnight. Areas of patchy blowing snow may develop as strong winds move across the region.
Snow accumulation should remain under half an inch, but the combination of wind and falling temperatures could produce slick spots on major corridors including I-70, I-35, and I-435 late Sunday night into early Monday.
Conditions improve Monday with sunshine returning but much colder air settling in, with highs only reaching around 30°F. Winds remain brisk across the Kansas City area before calmer weather returns Tuesday.
