Kansas City, Mo. – Storms could sweep into Kansas City by Tuesday afternoon, bringing downpours and lightning that may disrupt evening commutes and flights.

According to the National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill, scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected after 1 p.m. Tuesday. Rainfall may cause ponding on roads, particularly along Interstates 70 and 35, with reduced visibility in heavier bursts. Storm chances rise Tuesday night, and some areas could see repeated downpours.

Drivers should allow extra travel time, avoid flooded underpasses, and prepare for slowed traffic during the Tuesday evening rush. Outdoor plans may need adjusting as lightning remains the greatest threat during peak evening hours. KCATA riders should also expect possible bus delays.

By Wednesday, rain chances increase to 50 percent during the day and 70 percent overnight. Temperatures will cool slightly, with highs near 87 on Wednesday before dropping into the upper 70s late week. The unsettled stretch continues into Thursday, with lingering showers and isolated storms keeping conditions damp.

Air travelers out of Kansas City International Airport should monitor flight schedules closely Tuesday evening through Wednesday, as scattered storms may cause delays or ground stops. Energy crews also warn of isolated power outages if lightning clusters move directly over the metro.

Relief arrives Friday with more sunshine and highs in the upper 70s, setting the stage for a drier, comfortable weekend.

Warnings remain in effect for storms through Wednesday night, with updates expected Tuesday morning.
