Kansas City, Missouri – Strong thunderstorms could disrupt the Friday evening commute across Missouri and eastern Kansas, with wind gusts over 60 mph and hail large enough to damage vehicles expected between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, a cold front moving west to east will trigger storms first in eastern Kansas between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m., before expanding into western Missouri through the evening. The primary threat centers on damaging winds exceeding 60 mph, along with isolated hail up to golf ball size and a limited tornado risk.

Cities including Topeka, Lawrence, and Olathe may see early storm development, while Kansas City, St. Joseph, and areas along the I-70 corridor face the highest impact closer to the evening commute. Drivers should prepare for sudden visibility drops and ponding on roadways, especially where brief downpours repeat over already saturated ground.

Localized flooding could worsen in low-lying areas, particularly near creeks and poor drainage zones. Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, charge devices ahead of potential outages, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours.

Storm activity should move east by late Friday night, but additional alerts may be issued if storm intensity increases.
