Kansas City, MO – The first widespread hard freeze of the season is bearing down on Kansas City and surrounding counties as a cold, clear air mass settles across the Plains. The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill has issued a Freeze Warning from 1 AM CDT to 8 AM CST Sunday for most of eastern Kansas and western to northern Missouri — including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Kirksville, Sedalia, Warrensburg, and Atchison, KS.
Forecasters expect temperatures to fall into the mid-20s to upper 20s, marking the region’s coldest morning since early spring. The chill will be widespread, extending along the I-70 and I-35 corridors and into the rolling farmland north toward the Iowa line. The growing season will officially end for most of the region as sensitive crops, flowers, and exposed plants freeze.
According to the National Weather Service, frost and freeze conditions could also damage unprotected outdoor plumbing, and residents are urged to wrap pipes, cover spigots, and drain hoses. Gardeners should bring potted plants indoors or cover tender vegetation before sunset.
The good news: skies will stay clear through Sunday, and sunshine will help afternoon highs rebound into the upper 50s. Milder air returns early next week with highs near 60°F before another front brings clouds and possible light rain midweek.
Still, tonight’s chill marks a seasonal milestone — the unmistakable arrival of November’s first true freeze across the Heartland.
