Kansas City, Missouri — Multiple rounds of strong to severe thunderstorms could impact the region beginning tonight and continuing through Friday evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, storms are expected to develop late Thursday night before additional rounds move through the area on Friday. Forecasters say the system may bring damaging wind gusts, large hail, isolated tornadoes, and heavy rainfall across parts of Missouri and eastern Kansas.
The first round of storms is expected to begin around 10 p.m. Thursday, primarily affecting areas along and west of Interstate 35 in northwest Missouri, with activity potentially continuing into the overnight hours. Some storms may weaken as they approach the Kansas City metro area, but forecasters say there remains uncertainty about how much of that activity will hold together.
Another wave of storms may develop early Friday morning and spread across the region through mid-morning, particularly in areas south of Interstate 70.
The most significant severe weather potential is expected Friday afternoon and evening, when stronger thunderstorms could redevelop across the metro region and surrounding counties. Meteorologists say this round may bring the greatest risk for damaging winds, large hail, and isolated tornadoes.
Major travel corridors including Interstate 70, Interstate 35, and Interstate 435 could experience sudden visibility reductions, heavy rainfall, and hazardous driving conditions during stronger storms.
Residents are encouraged to monitor weather alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings, especially during overnight hours when severe weather may develop while many people are sleeping.
The developing storm pattern arrives ahead of the weekend and may affect commuters, students, and evening travel across the Kansas City metropolitan area.
