Kansas City, Missouri – Heavy rain arriving this evening could quickly overwhelm drainage systems and flood roads across the metro, with impacts expected to intensify overnight and into Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Flood Watch is in effect from this evening through Monday evening for much of eastern Kansas and western Missouri, including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Independence, and Overland Park. Rainfall totals are expected to reach around 2 inches, with locally higher amounts possible in stronger storms.
The greatest concern is excessive runoff leading to rapid rises on creeks, streams, and low-lying roads. Urban areas—including major corridors like I-35, I-70, and I-435—could see water ponding and possible closures during periods of heavy rain, especially overnight into the Monday morning commute. Smaller communities such as Platte City, Liberty, and Leavenworth may also experience localized flooding in poor drainage areas.
Residents should avoid driving through flooded roadways and monitor conditions closely overnight. Charge devices and prepare for potential warnings if storms intensify.
The flood threat will continue through Monday evening as additional rain moves through the region. Flash Flood Warnings may be issued with little notice if rainfall rates increase.
