Kansas City, Missouri – Strong to severe thunderstorms could erupt across the metro after 6 p.m. Friday, threatening 70 mph wind gusts along I-70 and I-435 during the evening commute. Residents should use the quieter daylight hours to prepare before storms redevelop and intensify after sunset.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, scattered showers and storms may linger south of I-70 tonight, with a brief lull expected during the day Friday. Storm chances increase again Friday evening and overnight as a stronger system moves into the region. Forecasters warn that some storms could become severe, producing damaging winds, large hail, isolated tornadoes, and locally heavy rainfall.
Communities on both sides of the state line, including Overland Park, Olathe, Lee’s Summit, and Independence, face the greatest risk Friday evening. Hail up to around 1 inch in diameter could dent vehicles near US-69 and I-35, while wind gusts approaching 70 mph may down tree limbs and cause scattered power outages. Heavy downpours could briefly reduce visibility on I-70 and create ponding on low-lying roads.
Drivers should avoid unnecessary travel during active warnings and never drive through water-covered roadways. Secure outdoor items, park vehicles in garages if possible, and ensure mobile alerts are enabled before storms arrive.
Storms may continue into the overnight hours before shifting east early Saturday. Additional watches or warnings are likely if storms organize into a stronger line during the evening hours.
