Kansas City, Missouri – Drivers across northern and western Missouri could face powerful wind gusts and rapidly changing weather Sunday as a strong storm system moves through, bringing thunderstorms before colder air crashes in overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, a strong cold front will sweep across the region Sunday, producing scattered showers and thunderstorms before shifting winds sharply to the northwest behind the front. Wind gusts across communities including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Kirksville, and Maryville could reach 45 to 50 mph Sunday afternoon and evening.

These strong winds may make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles along major corridors such as Interstate 29, Interstate 35, and Interstate 70, especially during the late afternoon and evening when gusts peak.

As colder air surges in overnight, rain may briefly transition to light snow before precipitation ends Sunday evening. While significant accumulation is unlikely, temperatures will continue to fall as strong northwest winds persist.

By early Monday morning, wind chills could drop below zero across parts of northern Missouri, especially in areas north of Kansas City including Maryville and Kirksville.

Residents should secure loose outdoor items, prepare for rapidly falling temperatures, and dress for winter conditions Monday morning. Gusty winds are expected to continue into Monday before gradually easing later in the day.
