KANSAS CITY, MO–KS – A sharp chill clings to the pre-dawn air this Halloween morning, with lawns across the metro glittering under a light frost. The National Weather Service in Pleasant Hill has issued both a Frost Advisory and a Freeze Watch, warning residents that this weekend could bring the coldest air of the season so far.

Temperatures across Kansas City and surrounding counties dipped into the upper 30s early Friday, marking the start of a cold pattern expected to deepen through Sunday. The Frost Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. today, but attention quickly shifts to the Freeze Watch in place for late Saturday night through Sunday morning, when readings may plunge into the upper 20s to low 30s.

The combination of clear skies, calm winds, and dry air will create ideal conditions for frost and freeze formation. Residents are urged to cover sensitive plants, disconnect outdoor hoses, and wrap exposed plumbing ahead of Saturday night’s temperature drop. Unprotected tender vegetation and late-season crops could be damaged or killed by sub-freezing temperatures.

Despite the cold mornings, the weekend brings mostly sunny afternoons, with highs in the mid-50s Saturday and upper 50s Sunday, offering pleasant fall afternoons for outdoor plans. But the early November chill signals the season’s firm transition toward winter.

Long-range outlooks suggest another Arctic front could arrive by mid-next week, hinting at an even colder stretch ahead for Missouri and Kansas — possibly with the first flakes appearing north of I-70 before mid-November.
