Kansas City, Missouri — Arctic air moving into the region late this week is expected to bring dangerously cold wind chills to the Kansas City area, with sub-zero values likely Friday and Saturday mornings.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, mild temperatures today and Thursday will give way to sharply colder conditions Thursday night as Arctic air settles into northern Missouri. Wind chill values are forecast to drop below zero by early Friday morning and remain dangerously cold into Saturday morning.

Forecast guidance shows wind chills in the Kansas City metro potentially ranging from minus 5 to minus 15 degrees during the coldest periods, with even colder values possible in outlying areas north of the city. These conditions increase the risk of frostbite on exposed skin within minutes.

While snowfall is not the primary concern, the extreme cold may still impact travel. Any moisture remaining on road surfaces could refreeze overnight, creating slick spots, particularly on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.

Major roadways including Interstate 70, Interstate 35, and Interstate 435 could be affected during early morning hours when temperatures and wind chills are lowest. Vehicle issues such as dead batteries and reduced tire pressure are also more likely during prolonged cold.

The National Weather Service urges residents to limit time outdoors, wear multiple layers, and ensure pets are brought indoors. Drivers are advised to carry winter emergency supplies, including blankets and extra clothing, in case of breakdowns.

The coldest conditions are expected during the early morning hours Friday and Saturday, with gradual improvement expected later in the weekend.

For commuters, students, and early-shift workers, the highest-risk period will be Friday morning, when sub-zero wind chills may coincide with peak travel times across the Kansas City area.
