Kansas City, MO – A strong storm system will bring rain and gusty winds to the Kansas City region late Saturday night into Sunday, followed by a sharp drop in temperatures and dangerous wind chills by Monday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, showers are expected to develop late Saturday night and continue through Sunday afternoon, with the best chances east of U.S. Highway 65. Rainfall amounts are forecast to be generally a quarter inch or less. Forecasters said a thunderstorm cannot be ruled out, though any severe weather would be isolated and unlikely.

As colder air moves in behind the system, northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 30 to 40 mph are expected on Sunday. The National Weather Service said these winds will usher in much colder air, with temperatures falling rapidly after a warm end to the week.

By Monday, forecast highs are expected to be 30 to 45 degrees colder than Saturday, with highs likely remaining below freezing across the area. Wind chills near zero are possible by Monday morning, particularly during the early commute.

The National Weather Service also noted that a brief snow shower cannot be ruled out Sunday afternoon as colder air arrives, though little or no accumulation is expected.

Residents are encouraged to prepare for the abrupt temperature change and monitor updated forecasts as conditions evolve heading into early next week.
