Kansas City, Mo. – Morning commuters across Missouri and eastern Kansas are facing dense fog Friday, with visibility dropping below a quarter of a mile in some areas. The thick fog is expected to linger through the early hours, creating hazardous travel conditions on highways and rural roads.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, patchy fog will lift by midmorning, but unsettled weather returns late Saturday as showers and a few thunderstorms develop. Rainfall totals between a quarter and one inch are possible across eastern Kansas into western Missouri through Monday. No severe storms are expected, but lightning and brief downpours may slow weekend travel.

Drivers in Kansas City, St. Joseph, and Columbia should plan extra time for morning commutes Friday and be prepared for wet roads by late in the weekend. Rural areas along I-35 and I-70 could experience the greatest fog-related travel disruptions early Friday.

Temperatures will trend near to slightly below normal through next week, providing a break from recent late-summer heat. Additional rainfall chances are expected to continue into early next week.
