Kansas City, MO – A dangerous heat wave is gripping much of Kansas and Missouri, with extreme heat warnings in effect through Thursday evening. According to the National Weather Service, heat index values could reach as high as 107°F, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
The warning, which is active until 7 p.m. Thursday, covers areas across northeast Kansas and central Missouri, including cities like Kansas City, Overland Park, Liberty, Sedalia, and Warrensburg. The oppressive heat is expected to continue for several days, bringing high humidity and unrelenting temperatures.
Experts caution residents to drink plenty of water, avoid prolonged sun exposure, and stay in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Authorities recommend checking in on vulnerable neighbors and family members, especially the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. Those working outside should wear loose-fitting clothing and take frequent breaks, ideally in shaded or air-conditioned areas. Strenuous activities should be limited to early mornings or late evenings to avoid the hottest parts of the day.
By Thursday night, the heat wave is expected to taper off, but additional heat advisories may follow if temperatures persist.
