KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A hazy sky over Missouri is expected to linger Thursday as Canadian wildfire smoke drifts across the region, dimming air quality before rain chances return Friday. Temperatures are set to cool sharply, offering a fall-like feel through the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop Friday morning, especially south of the Missouri River. The heaviest rainfall is likely near Sedalia and Jefferson City, with lighter showers possible farther north.
Drivers may face slick roads during Friday’s commute, particularly along I-70 and Highway 50 where storms may be most active. Residents are advised to limit outdoor activity Thursday if sensitive to reduced air quality, as haze could hang over the area until rain helps clear conditions.
Daytime highs will struggle to reach the mid-60s Friday, nearly 15 degrees cooler than normal for early September. Overnight lows will dip into the low 50s, with Sunday morning bringing widespread 40s across northern and central Missouri.
Cooler-than-normal weather is expected to hold into early next week, with additional updates possible if storms redevelop over the weekend.
