Kansas City, Missouri – Extreme heat will blanket the Kansas City metro and much of central Missouri and eastern Kansas starting at noon Saturday, with dangerously high heat index values up to 110° and little relief even overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, the Extreme Heat Warning covers Kansas City, Olathe, Independence, and as far east as Sedalia and Moberly, remaining in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday. Notably, nighttime temperatures may linger in the upper 70s, making it harder for residents to recover from the day’s heat.
Miami, Johnson, Wyandotte, and Leavenworth counties in Kansas—along with Platte, Clay, Jackson, Cass, and Johnson counties in Missouri—will all face heightened risks of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Local officials advise staying indoors with air conditioning, hydrating frequently, and checking on vulnerable neighbors and relatives. Residents should also be cautious with outdoor work, wearing light clothing and scheduling activity for early morning or after sunset.
City cooling centers may extend hours to help residents cope with the prolonged heat. Never leave children or pets in parked vehicles, even briefly, as conditions will turn deadly within minutes.
The Extreme Heat Warning remains active through Wednesday evening, and further advisories could be issued if the heat wave persists.
