Wichita, KS – Severe thunderstorms are expected to move east from western Kansas tonight, potentially bringing large hail up to a quarter size, damaging winds up to 70 mph, and heavy rainfall. The greatest potential for severe storms will be in central Kansas between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., according to the US National Weather Service in Wichita.
The weather service advises residents to have multiple ways to receive warning information, especially if they have outdoor plans. Scattered showers and storms are anticipated this morning and will persist into the afternoon across most of the area. The strongest storms may produce nickel-size hail, gusty winds up to 40 mph, and heavy rain. The chance for storms continues through Independence Day.
The Fourth of July forecast indicates late afternoon and evening storms, particularly southeast of the Kansas Turnpike. Afternoon temperatures are expected to be quite comfortable for early July standards, with maximum heat indices ranging from 86°F in Russell to 105°F in Coffeyville. Wichita will see highs around 99°F, while Hutchinson can expect a high of 93°F.
Rain chances today are significant, with Russell and Salina at 59%, Hutchinson at 65%, and Wichita at 64%. Tonight’s low temperatures will range from 64°F to 74°F. On July 4th, highs will be between 85°F and 97°F, with the warmest areas along the Oklahoma border. Friday’s forecast predicts mostly sunny skies with highs between 84°F and 88°F.
