Wichita, KS – An extreme cold warning remains in effect for south-central and southeast Kansas through noon Thursday, with wind chills as low as 25 degrees below zero expected. The National Weather Service urges residents to limit time outdoors and bundle up in layers, as frostbite can occur in just 30 minutes on exposed skin.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will struggle to reach double digits Wednesday, with a high near 10°F. Overnight, wind chills will drop as low as -19°F, making for dangerously cold conditions. Thursday will see a slight improvement, with a high near 14°F, but wind chills will still be a factor, falling to -15°F at times.
By Friday, conditions will begin to improve, with highs climbing to 24°F under mostly sunny skies. The warming trend will continue through the weekend, with Saturday reaching 40°F and Sunday soaring to 52°F, offering relief from the Arctic blast.
Residents are advised to dress in warm layers, including hats, gloves, and face masks when outdoors. Travel with an emergency kit and check on vulnerable neighbors as the cold persists.
