Goodland, KS – A blizzard warning is in effect for parts of northwest and west-central Kansas, as well as southwest Nebraska, from 7 p.m. Tuesday until 1 p.m. Wednesday. Strong winds and snow are expected to create hazardous travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Goodland, wind gusts could reach up to 60 mph, leading to whiteout conditions. Snowfall accumulation is expected to total up to 3 inches, with precipitation beginning as rain before transitioning to snow overnight.
The storm is expected to make travel on major roadways, including Interstate 70, dangerous or impossible due to blowing and drifting snow. Drivers are urged to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary and to carry emergency supplies such as flashlights, food, and water.
Strong winds may also lead to tree damage and power outages. Residents in affected areas, including Colby, Hoxie, Oakley, and McCook, should prepare for potential disruptions to daily routines.
Authorities advise checking local road conditions before traveling and heeding all weather warnings. The worst conditions are expected during the overnight hours into Wednesday morning, making the morning commute particularly hazardous.
