Kankakee, IL – A Kankakee man was arrested Monday in connection with multiple vehicle thefts reported in the city, according to authorities.
According to the Tri-County Auto Theft Task Force, officers took Ethan J. Smith, 20, into custody around 10:00 AM on January 27 after he was allegedly found in possession of a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado that had been reported stolen earlier that morning. The vehicle had been reported missing to Kankakee police at approximately 8:45 AM.
Investigators determined that Smith was allegedly linked to at least five additional stolen vehicle cases dating back to January 2, 2025, as well as a burglary to a motor vehicle. The thefts reportedly took place at various locations, including Hobbie Avenue, S. 5th Avenue, N. Chicago Avenue, N. Harrison Avenue, and E. Chestnut Street.
Smith was booked at the Jerome Combs Detention Center and charged with aggravated possession of a stolen motor vehicle, five counts of possession of a stolen motor vehicle, burglary to a motor vehicle, and possession of stolen property. Authorities stated that further charges may be pending as investigations continue.
