Kankakee, Illinois – Search and rescue operations are underway Tuesday night after a large tornado tore across eastern Kankakee County, leaving early reports of catastrophic damage with homes destroyed and power lines down.
According to the National Weather Service and local emergency officials, the storm developed in Livingston County before moving northeast toward Herscher, Illinois, where the tornado was confirmed on the ground by multiple sources. The circulation continued east of Kankakee, where the most severe damage has been reported.
Security cameras at Kankakee Community College captured video of the tornado as it moved through the area, providing some of the first visual confirmation of the storm’s strength.
Early emergency reports indicate several homes east of Kankakee were completely destroyed, with responders describing some structures as “wiped out.” Downed power lines have also been reported along Illinois Route 45, creating hazardous conditions as crews work through the debris.
Several businesses were struck during the storm, including a hotel and nearby commercial buildings. Multiple fire departments have responded to assist with damage assessments and rescue operations.
Officials say it is too early to determine the final intensity, though preliminary reports suggest the tornado may have reached EF3 strength. A formal damage survey by the National Weather Service will determine the rating in the coming days.
Authorities say search and rescue efforts will continue overnight as first responders check damaged homes and businesses. More updates are expected as crews work to determine the full extent of the damage and whether injuries occurred.
