Kankakee, Illinois – Kankakee Community College announced its Riverfront Campus will be closed Wednesday, March 11, allowing staff to assess potential damage after a tornado moved through the area Tuesday evening.

College officials said the precautionary closure will give facilities teams time to inspect buildings and campus infrastructure following the severe storm.

According to the college, surveillance cameras at KCC captured video of the tornado as it passed through the Kankakee area during the storm.

It remains unclear whether the campus itself sustained significant damage, and officials say inspections will determine if repairs or safety measures are needed before normal operations resume.

The tornado was part of a severe weather system that triggered widespread damage reports across Kankakee County, including destroyed homes, road closures, and thousands of power outages across Kankakee, Bourbonnais, Bradley, and nearby communities.

Local officials have also urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain cautious of downed power lines and debris while emergency crews continue response and damage assessments.

Kankakee Community College, located along the Kankakee River in northeastern Illinois, serves students across Kankakee County and surrounding areas. The college offers associate degrees, workforce training programs, and transfer pathways for students continuing to four-year universities.

Officials say additional updates about campus operations will be provided after damage assessments are completed.
