Kankakee, Illinois – United Way is seeking over 200 volunteers for 29 Earth Day service projects across two counties.
According to United Way of Kankakee & Iroquois Counties, the Day of Action is scheduled for Tuesday, April 22, 2026, with projects focused on park cleanups, neighborhood beautification, and restoration of spaces damaged by the March 10 tornado.
Organizers said volunteers of all ages are encouraged to participate in efforts spanning both counties. Activities include cleaning streets, assisting local nonprofits, and restoring community areas impacted by recent severe weather.
The annual event has expanded significantly from the previous year. In 2025, more than 180 volunteers participated across 15 project sites. This year, the number of locations has nearly doubled, increasing the need for additional community support.
United Way officials said the initiative aims to mobilize residents to improve local environments while strengthening community connections. Volunteers can view available projects and register online through the organization’s website.
The event is supported by several local partners, including CSL Behring, the City of Kankakee’s Economic and Community Development Agency, Kankakee Valley Park District, CNG, The Daily Journal, and Meijer. Planning efforts are being led in collaboration with local agencies and Olivet Nazarene University.
The event may be especially relevant for students and young residents seeking volunteer opportunities or community service hours.
United Way has served the region for more than 80 years, coordinating resources and partnerships to address local needs.
