Kankakee, IL – A Labor Day weekend traffic enforcement campaign led by Kankakee police resulted in dozens of citations, with officers targeting impaired and unsafe driving across the city.
According to the Kankakee Police Department, the campaign issued 35 seat belt citations, 11 of which occurred during nighttime patrols. Officers also reported five stop sign violations, nine uninsured motorist citations, and six distracted driving citations. Several other miscellaneous violations were recorded.
Lt. B. Latham of the Kankakee Police Department said the enforcement effort was part of the broader Labor Day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Drive High Get a DUI” initiatives. “Through the Labor Day safety campaign, we helped to make our roads safer and spread the word about the risks of impaired driving – ‘It’s Not a Game,’” Latham said.
The campaign was conducted in coordination with other law enforcement agencies and highway safety partners across Illinois. Funding for the initiative came from federal highway safety funds distributed by the Illinois Department of Transportation.
The enforcement effort coincided with statewide campaigns aimed at curbing impaired driving and promoting seat belt use during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year. Alongside DUI enforcement, the program included participation in “Click It or Ticket,” which focuses on seat belt compliance.
Police emphasized that safety campaigns such as these are designed to deter risky driving behaviors and reduce crashes during holiday weekends, when roadway traffic typically increases.
