Kankakee, IL – A Kankakee County jury has found a local man guilty in a felony domestic violence case involving strangulation, a crime authorities say carries a heightened risk of serious injury or death.
According to the Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office, the jury on Friday convicted Jeffrey Bracken, 35, of Aggravated Domestic Battery involving strangulation, a Class 2 felony under Illinois law. Bracken was found not guilty on a separate charge of aggravated battery of a child, a Class 3 felony.
Prosecutors said the case stemmed from a Bourbonnais Police Department investigation led by Detective Domagalski, whose work was praised by the State’s Attorney’s Office as instrumental in securing the conviction. Under Illinois law, a Class 2 felony carries a potential sentence of up to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Sentencing will be scheduled for a later date.
The State’s Attorney’s Office also credited the survivor in the case for cooperating throughout the investigation and prosecution, along with support provided by Harbor House – Kankakee County Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the office’s Victim & Witness Division. Assistant State’s Attorneys Samantha Sweeney and Alyssa Moeschke prosecuted the case.
Officials emphasized that strangulation is considered one of the most dangerous forms of domestic violence, noting it significantly increases the risk of future lethal incidents.
