Kankakee, IL – Man Killed in Shooting Outside East Oak Street Apartment

Kankakee, Illinois – A 35-year-old man was killed in a shooting outside an East Oak Street apartment Sunday evening, prompting a homicide investigation.

According to the Kankakee Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 5:51 p.m. Sunday to the 1200 block of East Oak Street after receiving a report of a firearm being discharged during an attempted apartment break-in.

Police said a caller reported that someone attempted to break into their apartment and that a firearm was fired during the incident. When officers arrived, they located a 35-year-old male gunshot victim lying outside the apartment where the attempted entry was reported.

Officers immediately rendered medical aid until Kankakee Fire Department EMS arrived on scene. The victim was transported to Riverside Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Detectives processed the scene and interviewed the resident involved in the shooting, police said. The firearm used in the incident was recovered and secured as evidence pending further investigation.

Authorities have not released the victim’s name or indicated whether charges have been filed. The incident remains under active investigation.

The shooting occurred in a residential area near apartment housing, a corridor frequently traveled by nearby residents and commuters during early evening hours.
