Kankakee, IL – Detectives are investigating a fatal shooting that left a 20-year-old Chicago man dead Sunday night in the parking lot of a Kankakee business on East Court Street.
According to the Kankakee Police Department, officers responded around 10:27 p.m. on November 23 to reports of gunfire in the parking lot of 952 E. Court Street. Upon arrival, police found Domie Smith, 20, of Chicago, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds next to a handgun. Smith was transported to Riverside Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Detectives recovered multiple shell casings at the scene. Three men who had been with Smith before the shooting were taken to the Detective Bureau for questioning.
Investigators say surveillance video from a nearby business showed Smith and his group arriving shortly before the shooting. A Buick with three occupants pulled up in front of the business, and Smith appeared to draw a handgun before approaching the vehicle. The driver allegedly fired multiple shots from inside the Buick, striking Smith several times before fleeing.
By 10:30 a.m. the next day, police located the Buick on South Chicago Avenue and detained a person of interest later that evening. The vehicle was processed for evidence, and detectives are coordinating with the Kankakee County State’s Attorney’s Office for further review.
Police say the motive remains under investigation.
“This case moved quickly due to the diligence and professionalism of our officers and detectives,” said Chief Chris Kidwell. “We’re thankful for the assistance from our regional partners and the Tri-County Auto Theft Task Force.”
