Kankakee, IL – The City of Kankakee has announced that Fire Deputy Chief Adam Heid will step down from his position after more than four years in the role, citing a desire to dedicate more time to his family. Heid will remain with the Kankakee Fire Department and return to his previous rank of Captain effective Tuesday, December 9, 2025.
According to city officials, Heid has served as Deputy Fire Chief since June 7, 2021, following years of service within the department. In his announcement, Heid expressed gratitude for the experience and the opportunity to lead, calling his tenure “both an honor and a privilege.”
“I am truly grateful and appreciative for the opportunity and experience to have served as Deputy Fire Chief,” Heid said. “Being the Deputy Fire Chief has been both an honor and a privilege, and will forever stand as one of the highlights of my career.”
Kankakee Fire Chief Bryan LaRoche also commended Heid for his leadership, saying, “I would like to thank DC Heid for his hard work and leadership that he has shown over his tenure. I appreciate the time he has dedicated to making this department better.”
Mayor Christopher W. Curtis added that while Heid is stepping down from the deputy role, the city is pleased that he will continue to serve as Captain and remain an integral part of the department. “On behalf of myself, the City Council, and the community, we thank DC Heid for his dedication and contributions over the last four and a half years.”
City administration officials stated that Kankakee will not immediately appoint a new Deputy Fire Chief. Discussions on next steps and departmental planning will begin soon to maintain leadership continuity and ensure that the Kankakee Fire Department remains one of Illinois’ strongest public safety units.
