Kankakee, IL – Pedestrians who use the bridge spanning the Kankakee River between Riverside and Kennedy Drive will need to find alternate routes this week. The City of Kankakee announced that the walkway is temporarily closed to allow crews to complete bridge deck repairs.

According to a city statement shared on social media Tuesday, the bridge will remain closed until the work is finished, though no reopening date has been announced. Officials said they will post an update once the pedestrian bridge has reopened.

The bridge, located near the Riverside area, is a popular route for residents walking between downtown Kankakee and nearby neighborhoods. City staff thanked residents for their patience during the closure, noting that the maintenance is necessary to ensure long-term safety and structural stability.

Travelers and walkers are advised to plan ahead and use alternate crossings over the Kankakee River while the repairs are underway.
