Kankakee, IL – Hundreds of residents gathered outside the Kankakee County Courthouse Saturday afternoon, joining millions across the United States in the second annual “No Kings Day of Peaceful Action.” The demonstration, held from 2 to 4 p.m., was one of more than 2,700 events nationwide calling for the defense of democratic institutions and limits on executive power.
According to organizers with CONNECT Kankakee and Indivisible Kankakee, the event was part of a coordinated grassroots response to what they describe as “authoritarian actions” by the Trump Administration. Protesters carried signs urging accountability, lawful governance, and respect for the Constitution despite steady rain throughout the afternoon.
“We’re coming together to push back against corruption and abuse of power,” said local volunteer organizer Brandon H.P. “Our democracy is endangered when the President defies the courts, uses the military on civilians, or targets political opponents. America doesn’t do kings or dictators.”
The nationwide movement began in June, when the first No Kings Day drew an estimated five million participants across all 50 states — a record-setting mobilization. Saturday’s follow-up event built on that momentum, emphasizing civic unity and nonviolence.
Organizers said all protests adhered to strict safety and de-escalation training, focusing on peaceful demonstration and community protection. For more information, residents can visit www.NoKings.org.
