Kankakee, IL – A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Kankakee County as intense lake effect snow is expected to develop overnight, bringing dangerous travel conditions and 6 to 10 inches of accumulation by Monday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago.
Snow will begin around midnight Sunday night and intensify quickly, with snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour at times. The heaviest snow is likely east of Interstate 57, where forecasters expect the most persistent lake-effect bands to develop.
The National Weather Service warns that conditions could vary sharply over short distances, with some neighborhoods seeing heavy snow while others experience lighter accumulations. Untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses will become slick and icy, especially during the Monday morning commute.
Visibility may drop to near zero at times in heavier snow bands, creating whiteout conditions. Motorists are advised to avoid travel if possible, or to use extreme caution and allow extra time if driving overnight or early Monday.
The heaviest snowfall should taper off by midday Monday, though lingering flurries and blowing snow may continue to affect travel into the afternoon.
