Kankakee, IL – Kankakee County is under a Winter Storm Warning as a strong system prepares to drop significant snowfall across the region from early Saturday through early Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago, 6 to 10 inches of snow are expected countywide, with the heaviest totals likely near Kankakee, Bourbonnais, Bradley, Manteno, and communities along the I-57 corridor. The warning runs from 3 a.m. Saturday to 6 a.m. Sunday.
Snow is forecast to begin shortly after 3 a.m., intensifying quickly through mid-morning and early afternoon. NWS forecasters say snow may fall at 1 inch per hour, creating rapidly deteriorating road conditions.
Major Kankakee County travel routes are likely to be significantly impacted, including:
- I-57 (Manteno–Kankakee–Aroma Park stretch)
- IL-50 (Schuyler Avenue)
- US-45/52
- IL-17, Warner Bridge Road, Court Street, Broadway Street
- Local roads across Momence, St. Anne, Herscher, Clifton, and Aroma Park
Travel on I-57 could become especially hazardous, with slow speeds, slick lanes, and visibility reduced during heavy bursts.
Lighter snow will continue into Saturday night before tapering off around 6 a.m. Sunday. Temperatures staying below freezing will allow accumulation on side streets and rural roads.
Drivers are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and check updated Illinois road conditions at GettingAroundIllinois.com.
