Bradley, IL – More than 100 gallons of sulfuric acid spilled inside a Kankakee County factory Monday evening, sending multiple firefighters to the hospital during a hazardous materials response.

According to officials with the Bradley Fire Department, crews were called to a business on East North Street just before 7 p.m. When firefighters arrived, they discovered a broken pipe had released between 100 and 150 gallons of sulfuric acid within the building.

The acid remained contained to the facility, and fire crews from across the area worked together to neutralize the spill by spreading lime over the affected area.

Multiple firefighters suffered minor acid burns during the cleanup effort. Three were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of leg injuries. Officials report the injuries were non-life-threatening, and no civilians were harmed.

Emergency personnel cleared the site after ensuring the acid was neutralized and the area was safe. The cause of the broken pipe is still under investigation, and the name of the business has not been disclosed.

No evacuations were required, and there is no ongoing risk to nearby residents, officials said. The incident is being reviewed to assess workplace safety and emergency procedures at the facility.

This is one of the largest chemical spills in the county this month, highlighting the risks emergency responders face during industrial hazmat incidents.
