Kankakee County, IL – Authorities have identified a 65-year-old man found dead inside a tornado-damaged home in Aroma Park.
According to the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 4:24 p.m. Thursday, March 12, to a residence on Oakwood Drive in Aroma Park, one of the communities heavily impacted by Tuesday evening’s tornadoes.
Upon arrival, deputies and members of the Kankakee County Coroner’s Office located and pronounced Maurice R. Norington, 65, deceased inside the damaged residence.
Officials said preliminary indications suggest Norington sustained fatal injuries related to the storm that struck the area earlier in the week. The home had sustained significant damage during the tornado event.
Authorities reported that Norington was initially discovered by employees of a service company working in the area, who then alerted emergency responders.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue assessing storm damage across the region.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends, and neighbors of Mr. Norington,” Sheriff Mike Downey said in a statement. “Our law enforcement officers and other first responders have had an incredibly difficult job since Tuesday evening’s devastating storms.”
Downey also praised emergency personnel and urged residents in storm-impacted areas to continue checking on neighbors and loved ones as recovery efforts continue.
The tornadoes earlier this week caused widespread damage in parts of Kankakee County, with multiple homes and structures affected in communities including Aroma Park.
Local officials say recovery and damage assessments are ongoing as crews continue clearing debris and restoring services.
For commuters, residents, and workers traveling through damaged neighborhoods, officials urge caution as cleanup operations continue and some streets remain obstructed.
