Grant Park, Illinois – Fire crews from multiple agencies responded to a structure fire at a nursery property in Grant Park on Wednesday morning, successfully containing the blaze and preventing further damage, officials said.
According to the Grant Park Fire Protection District, units were dispatched at approximately 11:30 a.m. to a reported structure fire at 10300 East 9000 North, also known as Sunrise Nursery Inc. Upon arrival, the first-due engine reported heavy fire and smoke coming from one of the remote barns near the food court area of the property.
Due to the size of the structure, limited on-scene manpower, and strong winds at the time of the incident, a box alarm was requested to bring in additional resources. A neighboring fire chief assumed command in accordance with established mutual aid agreements.
Officials said the incident was later upgraded to a second alarm because of the potential for significant property loss and economic impact if the fire spread beyond the initial structure. Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control quickly with coordinated suppression efforts.
Agencies assisting included fire departments and ambulance services from Aroma Park, Beecher, Bourbonnais, Bradley, Crete, Elite Ambulance, Frankfort, Lake Dale, Lake Village, Limestone, Lowell, Kankakee City, Kankakee Township, Manhattan, Monee, Riverside Ambulance, St. Anne, and the University Park Fire Department. The Grant Park Police Department assisted with traffic control in the surrounding area.
Fire officials confirmed that no civilians or firefighters were injured during the incident. Damage was limited to the affected structure, and the business was able to remain operational despite the loss.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
For residents and commuters in the East 9000 North area, authorities noted temporary traffic impacts during the response.
